Overview

L. Sprague de Camp and Fletcher Pratt’s 1942 novel, first serialised in Unknown Worlds in 1941, follows Fred Barber, an American diplomat convalescing in wartime England, who is carried off to Faerie as a changeling after a misunderstanding over a bowl of milk left out on Midsummer’s Eve. In the court of Oberon and Titania, where nothing behaves as it should, he finds the realm facing a threat that mirrors the war at home.
