Overview
Novaria is the invented world of L. Sprague de Camp's comic sword-and-sorcery fiction, a patchwork continent of small, quarrelsome city-states, each with its own eccentric customs, bureaucracy, and government. The core trilogy, collected as The Reluctant King, The Goblin Tower (1968), The Clocks of Iraz (1971), and The Unbeheaded King (1983), follows Jorian, a former court clockmaker crowned king of Xylar under a local law that requires the position to be filled by beheading its previous holder every five years. Rather than defend his throne, Jorian spends the trilogy trying to escape it, journeying across Novaria's rival states on picaresque errands that satirize heroic-quest conventions along the way. De Camp's dry humor and interest in practical, non-magical problem-solving distinguish Novaria from grimmer sword-and-sorcery contemporaries, aligning it instead with a more comic, skeptical strain of the subgenre he helped define.
