Synopsis
Lies Weeping opens the Pitiless Rain arc back in Hsien, a place the Black Company once called home, at a moment the mercenaries find themselves at a comparatively quiet crossroads. Two orphaned cousins, Arkana and Shukrat Voroshk, take up the role of the Company's new Annalists, recording events through alternating, informal journal entries rather than a single unified narrative. Adopted by Croaker, who is himself described as a mortal man on an ascent toward godlike status, the cousins keep their own murky origins largely hidden even from their friends Dikken and Tobo, and from the enigmatic figure simply called the Lady. Much of the book is given over to character and setting rather than immediate action, as the cousins' playful, diary-like chronicle gradually hints at deeper secrets surrounding their birth and the Company's uncertain future in this new story arc.
