Glen Cook was born on July 9, 1944, in New York City. He served in the United States Navy from 1962 to 1972, attached to the 3rd Marine Battalion Force Recon, and left active duty before a scheduled deployment to Vietnam. After his military service, he attended college while working at a General Motors auto assembly plant, writing fiction in his spare time and producing as many as three books a year. Cook is best known for The Black Company (1984), the first novel in a long-running series following an elite mercenary company; the series became a cult favorite, particularly among current and former members of the military, for its unglamorized, grounded depiction of soldiers "getting on with the job" rather than glorifying war. He also created the hardboiled fantasy detective series Garrett P.I., blending noir sensibilities with a magical setting, as well as the Dread Empire series. Cook's grim, morally ambiguous approach to fantasy warfare, told largely through the eyes of ordinary soldiers rather than heroic leaders, was highly influential on the later "grimdark" subgenre of fantasy fiction, inspiring numerous subsequent authors who sought to portray war and magic with similar realism and cynicism.
