Synopsis
Soldiers Live opens on an unusually settled Black Company, which has passed four years without losing a member in battle. Croaker, formerly the military dictator of Taglios, has stepped back from command to devote himself once more to his old role as the Company's historian, while Sleepy has taken over as captain, with longtime members Lady, Tobo, Goblin, and One-Eye still among the ranks. This calm is shattered when old adversaries move to trigger an apocalyptic event known as the Year of the Skulls, a threat that promises to push the Company to the very edge of annihilation. Drawing together enemies and secrets accumulated across the Company's long, roughly forty-year documented history, the novel forces Croaker and his comrades to confront the deepest and most dangerous of their old foes as the prospect of catastrophe looms over Taglios and beyond.
