Synopsis
In Dread Brass Shadows, the fifth Garrett P.I. novel, Garrett's on-and-off girlfriend Tinnie Tate is attacked in the street in a case of mistaken identity, an incident that draws Garrett into a hunt for a legendary magical artifact known as the Book of Shadows, or the Book of Dreams, which is said to let its owner assume any of a hundred different identities along with their abilities. Garrett takes on a young woman named Carla Lindo Ramada as a client, her resemblance to Tinnie explaining why the attack happened, and finds himself competing against a bounty hunter named Winger, dwarf factions, a witch, and the crime lord Chodo Contague, all pursuing the book for their own ends.
