Synopsis
Reap the East Wind opens a second trilogy within the Dread Empire series, set years after the events of All Darkness Met, as new threats emerge from the Empire of Shinsan's shifting internal politics and its continuing designs on the western kingdoms. A fresh generation of soldiers, sorcerers, and political players, some connected to the earlier conflict around Bragi Ragnarson and Kavelin and others entirely new, are drawn into a widening struggle as old enemies regroup and previously hidden factions within Shinsan itself begin to move against one another. The novel expands the series' scope beyond the western mountain kingdoms into the heart of the Dread Empire's own sorcery-driven society, raising the stakes for both sides of a conflict that has never truly ended.
Where it sits
- Universe: Dread Empire
- Series: Dread Empire core; position 6 of 8 in the series' recorded order
- Author: Glen Cook
Notes
- From the series record (Dread Empire): Original trilogy, two later-written prequels, and a run of sequels; the planned concluding volume was never finished after the manuscript was lost. A ninth title, "Wrath of Kings," was considered but excluded: on inspection it is an omnibus edition bundling books 6-8, not a standalone novel with an independent reader-rating pool.
Neighbouring works
Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
- Publication order, within the series Dread Empire: position 6 of 8: previous With Mercy Toward None (1985) · next An Ill Fate Marshalling (1988)
- Internal chronology, within Dread Empire: position 6 of 8: previous All Darkness Met (1980) · next An Ill Fate Marshalling (1988)
