Overview
The Dread Empire is an epic-fantasy sequence by Glen Cook, published across three distinct groupings: an original trilogy beginning with A Shadow of All Night Falling (1979), October's Baby (1980), and All Darkness Met (1980); two prequels written later, The Fire in His Hands (1984) and With Mercy Toward None (1985); and a run of sequels including Reap the East Wind (1987), An Ill Fate Marshalling (1988), and A Path to Coldness of Heart (2012), the last arriving more than two decades after the sequence's earlier volumes. The books follow the mercenary and sorcerer Bragi Ragnarson and the wars surrounding the shadowy Dread Empire and its scheming Dread Empress, blending large-scale campaign warfare with court intrigue. Cook, also known for the Black Company series, is frequently credited as an early and influential practitioner of grounded, morally ambiguous "military fantasy" that helped shape later grimdark writing.

Original trilogy, two later-written prequels, and a run of sequels; the planned concluding volume was never finished after the manuscript was lost. A ninth title, "Wrath of Kings," was considered but excluded: on inspection it is an omnibus edition bundling books 6-8, not a standalone novel with an independent reader-rating pool.
