Synopsis
Faded Steel Heat, the ninth Garrett P.I. novel, draws Garrett into several overlapping cases at once. Alyx Weider, daughter of the beer baron Max Weider, brings Garrett an extortion scheme targeting her family's business, seemingly run by a human-rights activist group called the Call and its leader, Marengo North English. At the same time city officials Colonel Block and Deal Relway pressure Garrett into infiltrating the Call as an informant, putting him in an uncomfortable position between the activists and the authorities. The threads tangle further when a murder conspiracy surfaces involving shapeshifters infiltrating the Weider household, and what starts as an engagement party for the family turns into a crime scene.
