Synopsis
Shadows Linger, the second novel of the Chronicles, follows the Black Company as most of the unit marches toward the Barrowland while a smaller detachment under Croaker is posted to the port city of Juniper to investigate a mysterious black castle that seems linked to the imprisoned Dominator, the Lady's former husband, and that is growing in a way no one can explain. There Company doctor and chronicler Croaker discovers that a deserter named Raven is sheltering a mute young girl, Darling, who turns out to carry a dangerous secret: she may be the reincarnation of the White Rose, a legendary rebel figure whose identity could doom the Company if the Lady ever learns of it. Raven's entanglement with a debt-ridden innkeeper named Marron Shed, and the castle's unnatural growth, add further threads of danger to Juniper as the wider empire's war continues elsewhere.
