Synopsis
Four years after the events of the first book, the orphan girls Emily Laing and Aurora Fitzrovia return to the ancient metropolis hidden beneath London. They travel with the alchemist Wittgenstein and the elf Maurice Micklewhite. Their task takes them to a desert in the underworld, where they must find the ashes of a woman who was once called Lilith. The journey mixes the soot and fog of Victorian London with magic, and the group has to rely on each other as they cross strange territory where old powers are stirring.
