Synopsis
Set as a prequel within the Tyrant Philosophers world, this novella follows Angilly, an agent of the Palleseen empire's Outreach intelligence wing, who is sent to investigate reports of a possible rebellion brewing in a remote province under Palleseen control. As she works through the layers of bureaucracy and procedure that govern the empire's occupation, Angilly becomes an increasingly uneasy witness to the slow, methodical way the Palleseen reshape and erase the cultures of the peoples they administer. Taking place before the events of the main novels in the series, the story builds out the workings and everyday machinery of the Palleseen empire's expansion, showing how its ideology of correction and improvement operates in practice on the ground, from the perspective of someone employed to serve it.
