Synopsis
Emily Laing wakes to find that London has vanished, and soon after she is taken away by two strange old women. Elsewhere, a girl with no parents turns up on an escalator with no sign of where she came from. Emily, the alchemist Wittgenstein, the elf Maurice Micklewhite and the clever rat Minna must go down into the magical city beneath the city to find answers. Each step brings danger, and the group has to work out what has happened to the city they know before the trail goes cold. The book picks up Emily's story years after the earlier novels.
