Synopsis

Maresi is the first novel in Maria Turtschaninoff's Red Abbey Chronicles, a Finnish fantasy series. It is set on the Red Abbey, an island refuge governed entirely by women that shelters girls and women fleeing danger or hardship from the outside world, and is narrated by Maresi, a thirteen-year-old novice who fled famine in her home village years earlier and has since built a quiet, studious life within the Abbey's walls and extensive library. Her sheltered existence is upended when Jai, a newcomer fleeing a violent past that has followed her even to the supposedly safe Abbey, arrives seeking sanctuary, forcing Maresi and the Abbey's other women to confront a danger from the outside world they had believed could never reach them.
