Synopsis

Marked is the ninth novel in the Alex Verus series and finds Alex, now serving on the Light Council after years of building his standing among the mages of London, trying to use his new position to protect the people close to him. The central pressure comes from his friend Anne, a life mage who has secretly formed a pact with a dangerous jinn, gaining power that increasingly slips beyond her own control. As Alex becomes aware of how far Anne has changed, he faces a choice between reporting her to the Council, as his official role would require, or concealing what she has become in order to protect her, a decision that puts him at odds with the political structure he has just joined. The novel follows the mounting strain between Alex's official duties and his loyalty to Anne as her situation grows more volatile.
