Synopsis
At Number Seventeen Cherry Tree Lane, London, the Banks family needs a new nanny for Jane, Michael and the twins, and one arrives on the East Wind, blown up to the front door with a carpet bag and a parrot-headed umbrella. Mary Poppins slides up the banister, unpacks an armchair from an apparently empty bag, and makes a dose of medicine taste like lime-juice cordial, strawberry ice and rum punch depending on who drinks it, and she will not stay a moment longer than "till the wind changes". Vain, stern and never willing to admit that anything odd has happened, she takes the children on adventures: tea on the ceiling with her laughing uncle Mr. Wigg, a trip around the world by compass, a night when the zoo's animals keep the humans in cages, and a visit to the Bird Woman. Then the wind changes.
