Synopsis
On Guy Fawkes Night the Banks children are setting off rockets in the park when one falling spark turns out to be Mary Poppins, descending by her umbrella to take charge of the nursery for the third time, "till the door opens". The adventures of her last stay include a visit to the marble statue of Neleus, who comes down off his pedestal in the park, the High Tide party at which all the fish of the sea come to look at the humans on dry land, the Cat That Looked at a King, and the Crack between the Old Year and the New, when storybook characters and enemies alike are friends. The door of the title is the Other Door, the one at the end of everything, and when it opens, Mary Poppins goes through it for good, waving to the children from the sky.

The first three follow her arrivals and departures; the later three are set within those visits.
