Synopsis
Memory and Dream, set in Charles de Lint's recurring city of Newford, centers on Isabelle Copley, a onetime art student who once possessed the extraordinary and dangerous ability to paint images so vividly that they took on life outside the canvas. After her gift caused tragedy among people close to her, Isabelle abandoned both her art and the dreams that fueled it, retreating into an ordinary existence. The novel opens years later, on the morning she receives a letter connected to Katharine Mully, a mentor who has been dead for five years, an event that reopens the past she has tried to leave behind. Isabelle is drawn back toward the abilities and responsibilities she renounced, forced to weigh what it would mean to reclaim a power she once swore never to use again.
