Synopsis
As Captain Samuel Vimes prepares to marry the wealthy Sybil Ramkin, the Ankh-Morpork City Watch takes on new recruits meant to diversify its ranks, including a dwarf named Cuddy, a troll named Detritus and a werewolf named Angua. Elsewhere, an embittered assassin named Edward d'Eath becomes fixated on restoring the city's abolished monarchy after learning that Watch recruit Carrot Ironfoundersson may be its rightful heir, and steals a unique experimental weapon, the only handheld firearm on the Disc, intending to use it to frame the Watch and destabilize the current government. When a string of guild murders begins, the ruling Patrician orders Vimes not to investigate, a command clearly meant to provoke exactly the opposite response.
