Terry Pratchett was an English author born April 28, 1948, in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, who began his career as a trainee journalist with the Bucks Free Press in 1965, during which he wrote more than eighty children's stories under the pseudonym Uncle Jim, and released his first novel, The Carpet People, in 1971. He later worked as a press officer for the Central Electricity Generating Board before becoming a full-time novelist in 1987. He became best known for the Discworld series, 41 comic fantasy novels published between 1983 and 2015, and also co-wrote Good Omens (1990) with Neil Gaiman. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1998 and was knighted in 2009 for services to literature, and received the Carnegie Medal in 2001 and the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 2010, along with ten honorary doctorates. With over 100 million books sold worldwide in 43 languages, he was the United Kingdom's best-selling author of the 1990s. Following his 2007 diagnosis with early-onset Alzheimer's disease, he publicly advocated for Alzheimer's research funding and end-of-life choice issues. He died on March 12, 2015, at his home in Broad Chalke, Wiltshire, from complications of posterior cortical atrophy, a form of the disease.
