Synopsis

Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and Magrat Garlick return home to Lancre from their travels abroad, and Magrat is startled to learn that King Verence has already announced their engagement without asking her first. Soon afterward, the appearance of mysterious crop circles warns Granny and Nanny that "circle time" is approaching, a rare alignment of parallel worlds when Elves from another dimension can slip through and prey on humans by manipulating their perceptions with glamour, normally kept out by an ancient ring of standing stones. When the older witches refuse to fully explain the danger, an increasingly frustrated Magrat gives up witchcraft to move into the castle and prepare for her wedding. Meanwhile, a group of younger local girls led by Diamanda Tockley forms a rival coven and begins dancing among the standing stones, unwittingly inviting the very incursion the older witches have spent their lives trying to prevent.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within the series Witches: position 4 of 6: previous Witches Abroad (1991) · next Maskerade (1995)
