Synopsis
Teppic, crown prince of the small, debt-ridden kingdom of Djelibeybi, has spent seven years training with the Assassins' Guild in Ankh-Morpork. Sensing his father's death, he returns home to be crowned pharaoh, only to find himself immediately at odds with Dios, the kingdom's rigid high priest, who effectively runs the country and resists any departure from ancient custom. Defying his father's own wishes and Dios's objections, Teppic orders the construction of an enormous new pyramid, far larger than any built before, and the vast project begins to place worrying strain on the fabric of reality around the kingdom. As the pyramid's construction proceeds, Teppic also tries to protect a handmaiden named Ptraci from a ritual execution, an act that puts him in direct conflict with Dios and threatens to upend the ancient order that has governed Djelibeybi for generations.
