Synopsis
King Verence I of Lancre is murdered by his ambitious cousin, the Duke Felmet, urged on by Felmet's wife. Before the king dies, a loyal servant escapes with his newborn son and crown, handing both into the care of three local witches, Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and Magrat Garlick. The witches place the boy with a troupe of traveling actors and hide the crown among their props, then cast a spell that advances time in the kingdom by fifteen years so that Felmet's misrule can do only limited damage before the rightful heir can grow up and return. To secure his own position, Felmet commissions a play designed to glorify his reign and blacken the witches' reputation, and sends his Fool to hire the very theater troupe now sheltering the missing prince, setting the stage for the players to unknowingly bring the past back to Lancre.
