Synopsis
Eleven-year-old Tiffany Aching leaves her family's farm on the Chalk to begin her formal training as a witch, apprenticed to the eccentric Miss Level, a woman who unusually inhabits two bodies at once, in a remote mountain cottage. Escorted partway by her former mentor Miss Tick, Tiffany is shadowed on the road by something unseen and unsettling, and soon after her arrival she becomes the target of a hiver, an ancient, invisible parasite that seeks out powerful minds to possess. Struggling to adjust to Miss Level's household, a circle of unwelcoming fellow apprentices led by the condescending Annagramma, and the watchful presence of the legendary witch Granny Weatherwax, Tiffany finds herself increasingly vulnerable just as the hiver closes in, forcing her to reckon with what kind of witch, and what kind of person, she actually wants to be.
