Synopsis
An island called Leshp suddenly rises from the sea in waters claimed by both Ankh-Morpork and the desert nation of Klatch, and the dispute over its ownership quickly inflames long-simmering tensions between the two powers. When a visiting Klatchian prince is attacked on Ankh-Morpork soil, Commander Vimes suspects the involvement of both a Klatchian officer and an ambitious local nobleman, Lord Rust, even as the Klatchian ruler responds by declaring war. Rather than lead the city into open conflict, the Patrician resigns, allowing Rust to seize control, declare martial law and call on the nobility to raise their own private armies.
