Synopsis
William de Worde, the estranged scion of an influential Ankh-Morpork family, scrapes by as an occasional writer of a private newsletter until a group of dwarfs offers him a working movable-type printing press. Seeing an opportunity, William founds the city's first true newspaper, the Ankh-Morpork Times, hiring the sharp-tongued Sacharissa Cripslock as his reporter and the vampire Otto Chriek as an iconographer. As the paper gains readers by reporting events as they actually happen, William and Sacharissa stumble onto a scheme by a secretive committee of wealthy men who hire the mercenaries Mr Pin and Mr Tulip to frame Lord Vetinari, the city's ruler, for embezzlement and attempted murder. Racing a rival, guild-backed newspaper determined to discredit them, William and Sacharissa must chase down the truth behind the plot before it destroys the Patrician and, with him, the fragile order of the city.
