Synopsis
Commander Sam Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch is reluctantly persuaded by Lord Vetinari to take his family on a country holiday to his wife Sybil's ancestral estate, certain that a policeman on vacation will find nothing to investigate. He is quickly proven wrong: local prejudice against goblins runs deep in the countryside, a children's author named Miss Felicity Beedle seems to know more than she says, and Vimes soon finds the severed finger of a goblin girl and signs of a brutal attack near the estate. When the local blacksmith Jethro Jefferson vanishes after a public argument with Vimes, Vimes himself becomes a suspect, and he joins forces with the sole local constable, young Feeney Upshot, to investigate a case that reaches from the estate's hidden corners into wider currents of goblin exploitation and organized crime.
