Synopsis
In Ankh-Morpork, the murder of Grag Hamcrusher, a fiercely traditionalist dwarf preacher, threatens to ignite open warfare between the city's dwarf and troll communities just as the anniversary of the ancient, disputed Battle of Koom Valley draws near. Commander Sam Vimes of the City Watch, under pressure from Lord Vetinari to solve the killing quickly, leads an investigation that takes him deep into the dwarfs' underground mine workings, aided by officers including Captain Carrot, Sergeant Angua and the newly recruited vampire constable Sally von Humpeding. At the same time, Corporal Nobbs and Sergeant Colon pursue a seemingly unrelated case involving the theft of an enormous painting depicting the legendary battle. As evidence mounts and further violence follows, Vimes must untangle the murder and the rising unrest before old grievances between dwarfs and trolls erupt into full-scale conflict in the city streets.
