Synopsis
Dick Simnel, a self-taught young engineer from Sto Lat, brings his newly invented steam locomotive, Iron Girder, to Ankh-Morpork, where his working prototype captures the interest of Sir Harry King, a self-made businessman looking to build a respectable legacy beyond his waste-disposal fortune. King agrees to bankroll the railway, and Lord Vetinari assigns the reformed con man Moist von Lipwig, now a trusted city official, to represent the government's interests as the line begins to expand across the Disc, aided by Moist's partner Adora Belle Dearheart. As momentum builds for a rail network linking Ankh-Morpork to distant cities, a faction of dwarfish fundamentalists bitterly opposed to the new technology begins launching attacks against the railway, and Moist finds himself managing both the practical challenges of laying track and the mounting danger posed by those determined to stop progress by force.
