Synopsis
Now Postmaster General but growing restless in the role, Moist von Lipwig is pressed by Lord Vetinari into taking charge of the moribund Royal Bank of Ankh-Morpork after its elderly owner, Topsy Lavish, dies and leaves control of the bank to her small dog, Mr Fusspot, with Moist appointed as the dog's chairman-minding keeper under the watch of an assassin bound to enforce her will. Thrust into a world of finance he barely understands, Moist must contend with the bank's distrustful, tradition-bound Chief Cashier Mr Bent, the scheming Lavish relatives eager to reclaim the institution, and a currency system that no longer works, since gold coinage is running out even as stamps have started to function as money.
