Synopsis
Count Magpyr and his family of modernizing vampires are invited to Lancre for the naming ceremony of King Verence and Magrat's infant daughter, and once there, the Count makes clear that his family intends to take the castle and the kingdom for themselves. Using a refined, near-irresistible form of hypnotic influence, the Magpyrs quickly win over most of Lancre's people, who accept the coming takeover with unsettling calm. Only a handful of people, notably the young witch Agnes Nitt and a newly ordained and uncertain priest named Mightily Oats, prove able to resist the vampires' mental hold, while Granny Weatherwax, offended at having been left off the christening's guest list, has withdrawn from Lancre's affairs entirely.
