Synopsis
Fifteen-year-old Tiffany Aching, now the only witch serving the Chalk, is caring for the elderly Baron when he dies, and rumor quickly turns into accusation that her herbal remedies were responsible for his death. Setting out for Ankh-Morpork to inform the Baron's son and heir, Roland, of his father's passing, Tiffany is stalked along the way by the Cunning Man, a malevolent spirit born from the hatred of a witch-hunter centuries dead, who feeds on suspicion and turns ordinary people against witches wherever he goes. As old prejudices resurface across the Chalk and beyond, fanned by the Cunning Man's influence, Tiffany must contend with her fraying standing in her own community, Roland's approaching marriage to the sheltered Letitia Keepsake, and the growing realization that she may be this ancient enemy's next target.
