Synopsis
The small, devoutly religious nation of Borogravia is losing a long war against its neighbors, its economy strained and its army decimated, while its rulers ban ever more everyday things as offenses against the war god Nuggan. Polly Perks, whose brother Paul was conscripted and has stopped writing home, cuts her hair, takes a false name and enlists as a man so she can search for him, since her family's tavern cannot legally pass to a daughter. She is placed in a ragtag new regiment under the inexperienced Lieutenant Blouse and the fearsome veteran Sergeant Jackrum, alongside a mixed group of recruits that includes a vampire, a troll, and an Igor, several of whom, Polly slowly realizes, are hiding secrets of their own.
