Synopsis
Middlegame is a 2019 science fantasy novel by Seanan McGuire, first in the Alchemical Journeys series. It follows Roger and Dodger, twins secretly created by James Reed, an alchemist attempting to manufacture a living embodiment of the Doctrine of Ethos, a fundamental force said to underlie the universe. Separated at birth and raised by different unwitting families, Roger grows into a prodigy of language and story while Dodger becomes a prodigy of numbers and mathematics, and the two discover they share an inexplicable psychic connection that spans the distance between them no matter how far apart they live. As children and then as young adults who eventually reunite at Berkeley for graduate school, they begin to realize their bond gives them extraordinary, reality-bending abilities, drawing the attention of Reed and his other creations, who have their own designs on what the twins might become.
