Synopsis

Beneath Elizabethan London lies the Onyx Hall, a faerie palace whose court mirrors the one above and into which no sunlight ever enters. It is ruled by Invidiana, a cold and ruthless queen who, before either of them came to her throne, made a secret pact with the young Elizabeth Tudor: the two queens have prospered together ever since, and England's golden age rests on a bargain its people know nothing of. Lune, a faerie lady fallen from Invidiana's favour, is sent above to spy on the mortal court and win back her place; Michael Deven, an ambitious young gentleman newly sworn to the Queen's Gentlemen Pensioners and working for the spymaster Walsingham, is set to uncover a hidden player behind English politics. Their paths cross, and what they uncover about the pact between the queens draws them both toward a choice that could unmake it.

Notes

  • From the series record (The Onyx Court): Marie Brennan's historical fantasy of the faerie court hidden beneath London, the Onyx Hall, across three centuries of English history: Elizabeth I's reign, the Civil War and Great Fire, the Royal Society's eighteenth century, and Victorian London's Underground and Goblin Market.
