Synopsis

In the twelve years before the single day of Shakespeare's Tempest, Miranda grows up alone with her father on a Mediterranean island, in the ruins of an abandoned Moorish palace, with elemental spirits for servants, a wailing spirit imprisoned in a pine tree, and a stern, secretive magus who will not tell her who she is or where they came from. The island's only other human is a wild boy who spies on her from the crumbling walls and leaves gifts at their door. When Prospero captures and binds him with magic as part of a grand experiment, Miranda teaches the feral child, Caliban, to speak, and the two lonely children become each other's only companions. Told in their alternating voices, the novel follows them into adolescence under Prospero's jealous eye, as his long plan of revenge gathers toward the storm, and toward an ending they cannot escape.
