Overview
Jacqueline Carey's 2017 retelling of The Tempest fills in the twelve years before Shakespeare's single day: Miranda's lonely childhood with her secretive father in the ruins of a Moorish palace on the island, and her friendship with the wild boy Caliban, whom Prospero captures and binds with magic as part of his grand experiment. Told in the two children's alternating voices as they grow up under Prospero's jealous eye, it turns the play's plot of revenge into a coming-of-age story that ends where the play does, with its happy ending seen from the other side. A separate world from Carey's Kushiel's Legacy and The Sundering.
