Overview
Hope Mirrlees's Lud-in-the-Mist (1926) is a standalone fantasy novel following the staid, prosperous town of Lud-in-the-Mist as illegal fairy fruit, smuggled in from the neighboring, forbidden land of Fairyland, disrupts its comfortable bourgeois order and exposes how much of the town's respectability depends on suppressing its own history and appetite for the uncanny. It is Mirrlees's only fantasy novel, written after two earlier literary novels and largely overlooked on first publication before being rediscovered decades later by genre readers and scholars. The novel has since been named by numerous later fantasy writers, including Neil Gaiman, as among their favorite works in the genre, and is frequently cited as an important influence on the development of British fantasy's more whimsical, folklore-steeped strand, distinct from the heroic epic tradition that dominated the genre through much of the twentieth century.
