Synopsis
Late in the year, when the rain has set in and the valley is sodden and dark, a handful of lonely people make their way to Moominhouse, each hoping for the Moomins' welcoming company: Snufkin, who cannot find his spring tune; the Fillyjonk, shaken by a near-fall from her roof; the Hemulen, who wants to be Moominpappa; the tiny creature Toft, who has made up his own Moominmamma; Grandpa-Grumble, who has forgotten his name; and the Mymble. But the Moomins are not there. They have gone away, and no one knows where or for how long, and the visitors must live together in the empty house, each coming to terms with the family's absence and with themselves. The last Moomin novel, written after the death of Jansson's mother, and, in the Times Literary Supplement's words, possibly the cleverest of the Moomin books.
