Tove Jansson (1914-2001) was a Finland-Swedish author, painter, illustrator and cartoonist, born in Helsinki to the sculptor Viktor Jansson and the illustrator Signe Hammarsten-Jansson. She studied art in Stockholm, Helsinki and Paris and considered her careers as painter and writer of equal importance, working as a satirical cartoonist for the magazine Garm during the war years. The Moomins and the Great Flood (1945), written as an escape from the war, began the nine Moomin books, written in Swedish and illustrated by herself, which by Moominvalley in November (1970) had made her world-famous; she also drew the Moomin comic strip for the London Evening News from 1954, later handing it to her brother Lars. Her novels for adults include The Summer Book (1972), set on the island in the Gulf of Finland where she spent her summers with her life partner, the graphic artist Tuulikki Pietilä, the model for Too-ticky. She received the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1966, and the Moomin books have been translated into more than fifty languages.
