Synopsis

Laid up with a cold, Moominpappa decides the time has come to write his memoirs, and reads each chapter aloud to Moomintroll, Sniff and Snufkin, who turn out to be the sons of his companions. Before he had a family, before he met Moominmamma, Moominpappa led a life of adventure and intrigue: abandoned as a foundling at an orphanage for Moomins run by a stern Hemulen aunt, he ran away, met the inventor Hodgkins and sailed in his ship, the Oshun Oxtra, with the Joxter and the Muddler, visited the island of the Hattifatteners and the Autocrat's kingdom, fell in with the Mymble and saw his first Moominmamma washed ashore in a storm. Jansson revised the book in 1968 as Muminpappans memoarer, and that text is the one in print. Tall tales from a short Moomin.
