Synopsis

A volcano erupts, the sea rises, and a flood sweeps through Moominvalley until the water laps at the second-floor windows. When a strange building floats past, the Moomins climb aboard, not realising it is a theatre, complete with a stage, scenery, a trapdoor and a resident ghost, Emma, the old stage rat who alone understands what a theatre is for. The family is scattered: Moomintroll and the Snork Maiden are stranded in a tree and arrested for burning a Hemulen's Midsummer bonfire, Snufkin uproots a park keeper's forbidding signs and finds himself in charge of twenty-four small children, and Little My is found asleep in a sewing basket. Moominpappa writes a play in blank verse, and on Midsummer Night the whole cast is reunited for its one disastrous, triumphant performance.
