Synopsis

When Moomintroll learns that a comet is going to pass by, he and his friend Sniff set out for the Observatory in the Lonely Mountains to ask the Professors what will happen. On the way they meet Snufkin, the wandering harmonica player who becomes Moomintroll's dearest friend, rescue the Snork Maiden from a poisonous bush and acquire her brother, the Snork, and the Hemulen who collects stamps; they have many adventures, but the greatest awaits them when they learn that the comet is headed straight for their home in Moominvalley. The journey back, as the sky turns red and the sea dries up, is a race against the comet itself, and the family's refuge is a cave on the shore. The first Moomin novel proper, in which most of the series' recurring characters make their entrance.
