Synopsis
In this sequel to Moribito, Balsa returns to Kanbal, the mountainous country of her birth, to face unresolved matters from her past for the first time since she fled as a child. Her homecoming reopens old wounds tied to the reasons she was forced to leave, while a secret buried in the mountains complicates whatever reckoning she hoped to make. As she navigates old political rivalries and personal grief, Balsa also becomes entangled with a plague threatening the land, drawing her deeper into troubles that connect her private history to a danger facing the wider country. The novel follows Balsa balancing her instincts as a warrior and bodyguard with the more personal task of confronting a past she has spent years running from.

- From the series record (Moribito): A Japanese-language fantasy series (translated by Cathy Hirano) following Balsa, a veteran spear-wielding bodyguard, protecting a young prince who carries the egg of a water spirit. Only the first two of the ten Japanese novels have been published in English translation; the remaining eight (spanning original Japanese publication from 2000 to 2018) are catalogued here as out of scope for now since no confirmed English edition exists, consistent with this database's practice of not inventing coverage it cannot verify.
