Overview
Moribito is Nahoko Uehashi's Japanese-language fantasy series, translated into English by Cathy Hirano, following Balsa, a veteran spear-wielding bodyguard who has vowed to save eight lives to atone for eight past deaths, as she protects young Prince Chagum after his own father orders his assassination, a journey that reveals the prince's mysterious bond with a legendary water spirit threatening the kingdom. Of the ten Japanese novels published by Kaiseisha between 1996 and 2018, only the first two have appeared in English, released by Scholastic's Arthur A. Levine Books imprint beginning in June 2008; both won the American Library Association's Mildred L. Batchelder Award for outstanding translated children's literature, in 2009 and 2010, and were named ALA Notable Children's Books. The remaining eight are left out of this admission for now, since no confirmed English edition exists to catalogue against. The original 1996 novel also spawned anime, manga, and live-action adaptations in Japan.
