Synopsis

The novel runs along three strands across two centuries. In the nineteenth century, the American painter Radborne Comstock takes work at Sarsinoor, an asylum on the Cornish coast run by the art collector Thomas Learmont, and becomes obsessed with a patient named Evienne Upstone. In the twentieth century, his grandson Valentine, a troubled painter, is shaped by a ghostly encounter with a woman in a painting. In the present, the journalist Daniel Rowlands, who is researching the legend of Tristan and Iseult, falls under the spell of Larkin Meade, a former mental patient, and she leads him toward the ruins of Sarsinoor. Behind all three runs a seductive presence from the faerie world that draws men in and ruins them.
