Overview
Mortal Love is a standalone fantasy novel by Elizabeth Hand, published by William Morrow in 2004. It weaves three strands across two centuries and two countries. In the nineteenth century, the American painter Radborne Comstock takes a post at Sarsinoor, a Cornish asylum run by the art collector Thomas Learmont, and becomes fixed on a patient, Evienne Upstone. In the twentieth century, his grandson Valentine, a troubled painter, is shaped by a ghostly encounter with a woman in a painting. In the present, the journalist Daniel Rowlands, researching the legend of Tristan and Iseult, falls under the spell of Larkin Meade. A seductive presence from the faerie world links all three. It is a single novel.
