Synopsis
The fourth short-story anthology set in Valdemar collects sixteen new tales plus an original novella by Mercedes Lackey, who created the world of Heralds chosen by magical, horse-like Companions to patrol their kingdom, dispense justice, and protect their monarch. A roster of established fantasy authors, including Tanya Huff, Mickey Zucker Reichert, Fiona Patton, Judith Tarr, and Rosemary Edghill, contribute stories alongside Lackey's own work. As with the earlier volumes in the series, the book is structured as a mosaic of independent adventures rather than a single plot, following different Heralds, Companions, and other residents of Valdemar as they face threats, solve mysteries, and navigate the responsibilities that come with their gifts, giving readers a broader picture of the kingdom's people and challenges.
