Synopsis

Durine, Kethol and Pirojil are three mercenaries who have spent twenty years fighting other people's battles, against the Tsurani, the Bugs and the goblins, and now it seems they have run out of enemies to kill. A few months of garrison duty offer a welcome respite; then they are given what looks like cushy work, escorting the bed-hopping Lady Mondegreen and her lover, the ambitious Baron Morray, to a summit in the snowbound city of LaMut. As the intrigues thicken, the three are made captains and charged with keeping the peace among bored baronial retainers; then the ageing Baron Mondegreen dies, and Morray and Lady Mondegreen are found murdered. Suspicious of everybody, including one another, the Three Swords go looking for the killer. The second Legends of the Riftwar novel, written with Joel Rosenberg.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
