Raymond E. Feist is an American fantasy author born December 21, 1945, in Los Angeles, California. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts with Honors from the University of California, San Diego, in 1977, where he created the fictional world of Midkemia as an alternative setting for a Dungeons & Dragons-style tabletop campaign run with his gaming group, the Thursday Nighters. That setting became the foundation for his debut novel, Magician (1982), which launched the long-running Riftwar Cycle, an extensive sequence of novels and short fiction set primarily in the worlds of Midkemia and Kelewan. Feist's other major works include the Empire trilogy, co-written with Janny Wurts, and Faerie Tale, his only novel set outside the Riftwar universe. He later began the Firemane trilogy (2018–2022), comprising King of Ashes, Queen of Storms, and Master of Furies. Feist received the Inkpot Award in 1988 in recognition of his contributions to fantasy and gaming culture, and his books have been translated into multiple languages worldwide, selling more than fifteen million copies. He resides in San Diego, California, the city closely tied to the university roots of his fiction.
